I am a British citizen currently living and working in South Korea as an ESL teacher. Teaching seven-year-olds has been a wonderful experience, and it’s my students who inspired me to create the Messy Bessie series. The first book in the series, Messy Bessie’s First Pet, kicks off a collection of 10 stories written as a journal, capturing Bessie’s adventures and lessons in life.
Watching my students navigate their “firsts” every year—whether it’s making new friends, tackling challenges, or learning about the world—gave me the idea for Bessie’s character. I wanted to find a fun and engaging way to explore life’s lessons through Bessie’s innocence, humorous antics, and rhyming verse, creating stories that children aged 7 to 9 would love to read.
My hope is that young readers will laugh at Bessie’s funny mistakes, relate to her experiences, and take away the lessons she learns by the end of each tale. Whether you’re a parent, a teacher, or simply someone who loves children’s stories, I hope you enjoy Bessie’s adventures as much as I’ve enjoyed bringing her to life!
